How does molecular structure affect the response of an organic dye to light? In our 2025 paper with Kamila Łupińska and colleagues, we investigated five donor–π–acceptor dyes containing a stilbene linker and a tricyanofuran (TCF) acceptor.
Optical measurements in solution and in the solid state were combined with quantum-chemical calculations of conformers and absorption spectra. The study examined light-induced E-to-Z isomerization and, in dye-doped polymers, photoinduced birefringence and its persistence after irradiation.
This work continues our collaboration with experimental teams on the relationship between molecular structure, photochemical transformations and optical properties.
